What is Gum Grafting?

Gum grafting is a surgical procedure aimed at treating gum recession. Gum recession occurs when the margin of the gum tissue surrounding the teeth wears away or pulls back, exposing more of the tooth or the tooth's root. This can lead to sensitivity, increased risk of root decay, and aesthetic concerns. Gum grafting involves taking gum tissue from one area of the mouth and attaching it to the areas where the gums have receded.

Reasons for Gum Grafting

  • Prevention of Further Recession and Bone Loss: By restoring gum tissue, gum grafting helps prevent further recession and bone loss around the teeth.
  • Reduction of Tooth Sensitivity: Covering exposed roots helps reduce discomfort and sensitivity to hot and cold temperatures.
  • Improved Aesthetics: For many patients, gum grafting improves the appearance of their smile by creating a more even gum line.
  • Enhanced Oral Health: Gum grafting can protect exposed roots from decay and other damage.

Types of Gum Grafts Offered at 5 Corner Dental

  • Connective Tissue Grafts: The most common type, used to cover exposed roots. Tissue is taken from a flap of skin on the palate and stitched over the area of gum recession.
  • Free Gingival Grafts: Similar to connective tissue grafts, but the tissue is taken directly from the palate without creating a flap.
  • Pedicle Grafts: Involves grafting gum tissue from adjacent areas that do not have recession.

The Gum Grafting Procedure

  1. Initial Consultation: Dr. Hakimi will assess your specific needs, discuss your medical history, and explain the gum grafting options available to you.
  2. Preparation: Depending on the type of graft, local anesthesia is administered to ensure comfort during the procedure.
  3. Grafting Procedure: The selected type of gum tissue is harvested and then carefully sutured to the affected gum area.
  4. Recovery and Healing: Post-operative care instructions are provided to ensure a smooth healing process. Healing typically takes a few weeks, during which you may need to eat soft foods and follow specific oral hygiene practices.

After gum grafting, proper oral hygiene and follow-up visits are crucial to ensure the success of the graft and overall oral health. We provide detailed care instructions and support throughout the healing process.
